The full name for MRT is Mass Rapid Transit. It belongs to a company called SMRT. MRT is one of the fastest way to get around Singapore. The SMRT operates two main rail lines, the North South Line and the East West Line, which makes a continuous loop. However, there is another line, North East Line. The North East Line is operated by SBS Transit.

The MRT is connected to the LRT system, Light Rail Transit. It links MRT stations with nearby HDB public housing estates. There are currently Bukit Panjang LRT, Sengkang LRT and Punggol LRT.

The government plans to expand the MRT system. The next main rail line, Circle Line, is currently under construction. It will connect all the existing rail lines. There will be a new line, Downtown Line, which will connect the northwestern and eastern region to the south region of Singapore.

Plans for the Eastern Region were also revived. It will extend from South to East of Singapore ending at Changi. There will also be a Thomson Line which will extend from the western end of the Eastern Regional Line to the northern part of Singapore.

SMRT has four depots currently, Bishan depot, Changi depot, Ulu Pandan depot and Kim Chuan depot. The Bishan depot houses a central maintenance with train overhaul facilities. The Changi and Ulu Pandan depots inspect and house trains overnight. The Kim Chuan depot houses trains for Circle Line. The Sengkang depot houses trains for the North East Line, Sengkang LRT and Punggol LRT, all operated by SBS Transit.
